Toshiba Unveils New 18TB MG09 Series Hard Disk Drives

9-disk Helium-sealed design plus innovations in energy-assisted recording allow heightened levels of storage density and power efficiency to be reached

Düsseldorf, Germany, 18th February 2021 – Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH (TEE) has announced the introduction of its new MG09 Series, which comprises the company’s first HDD models to feature energy-assisted magnetic recording. The MG09 Series is based on Toshiba’s proprietary third-generation, 9-disk Helium-sealed design and incorporates game-changing Flux Control – Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (FC-MAMR) technology. Thanks to these advances, Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) density has been raised to 2TB[1] per disk, thereby achieving a total capacity of 18TB.

With 12.5% more capacity than the previous 16TB models, the 18TB MG09 Series CMR drives are compatible with the widest range of applications and operating systems. These drives are adapted to deal with mixed random and sequential read/write workloads for both cloud-scale and traditional data centre implementations. They deliver 7,200rpm performance, with a 550TB per year workload rating[2] and a choice of either SATA or SAS interfaces. All this has been packed into a compact industry-standard, power-efficient, Helium-sealed 3.5-inch[3] form factor being supported.

The MG09 Series further demonstrates Toshiba’s commitment to the continued progression of HDD design, and the company’s ability to meet constantly evolving market needs for storage devices in cloud-scale servers, as well Object and File storage infrastructure deployments in general. Through enhanced power efficiency figures and industry-leading capacity levels, these drives are set to enable heightened storage densities to be attained in cloud, hybrid-cloud and on-premises rack-scale operations. Reductions in the necessary CapEx will thereby be witnessed, so the total cost of ownership (TCO) can be kept to a minimum.

“With the new high capacity power-efficient MG09 Series HDDs, Toshiba is providing real value to our cost-conscious cloud-scale and storage solutions customers. Leveraging FC-MAMR technology, these drives address critical TCO objectives, lowering unit cost to per GB substantially,” states Larry Martinez-Palomo, General Manager Storage Products Division, Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH..

Sample shipments of 18TB MG09 Series HDDs to customers are expected to start sequentially at the end of March 2021.

Toshiba expands its Surveillance Hard Disk Drive series

The S300 and S300 Pro series are optimized for demanding surveillance applications.

Düsseldorf, Germany, 27 August 2020 – Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbHannounces the expansion of the Toshiba S300 Surveillance Hard Disk Drive series. This includes a new S300 series using shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology for small and medium-sized businesses and the renaming of the conventional magnetic recording (CMR) technology surveillance drives to the S300 Pro series for professional and public sector use.

Targeting the demands of small-to-medium-scale video surveillance systems, the new S300 series hard drives, available in 2TB[1] and 4TB, are optimized for use in cost-constrained applications while meeting the requirements of surveillance systems with up to 32 high-definition camera streams[2]. The S300 series with 5400 rotations per minute (rpm) and a buffer size of 128MB[1] meets various requirements for HD video surveillance including technology for set-top boxes, digital video recorders (DVR), and network video recorder (NVR).

The new low capacity S300 series is based on SMR technology that uses overlapped tracks for higher data density, leaving just the required magnetic surface needed for correct reading. This contrasts with CMR where each track is separated by a small distance. As a result, SMR allows higher capacities for the same magnetic area as a CMR drive to help improve total cost of ownership (TCO). The implementation of an appropriate cache-architecture compensates the potential disadvantages of random re-writing of overlapped tracks making the S300 series suitable for small-to-medium-scale surveillance applications.

For large-scale surveillance systems that require up to 64 high-definition camera streams, video analytics, face-tracking and editing functions, Toshiba offers the S300 Pro series with CMR technology. With high capacities of up to 10TB and a buffer size up to 256MB, they are suitable for surveillance digital video recorders (SDVR), surveillance network video recorders (SNVR), and hybrid SDVR.

“Considering the continuous growth in surveillance systems worldwide, Toshiba’s refreshed S300 series and S300 Pro hard drives offer a tailor-made surveillance storage solution. Targeting the latest requirements in the surveillance storage market, they provide stable 24/7 operation and are optimized to the needs of leading surveillance DVRs and NVRs using eight drive bays or more. Toshiba helps surveillance system integrators, system installation providers, and end users to record and store their video and audio streams with confidence,” noted Lorenzo Martinez-Palomo, General Manager, Storage Products Business Marketing, Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH.

The Toshiba S300 Pro series and the new S300 4TB model are available now, while the S300 2TB is expected to be available later this year. For more information on the products, capacities, and their availability, please visit: https://www.toshiba-storage.com/products/s300/

Use of Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology in Toshiba Consumer Hard Drives.

The introduction of Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology has enabled HDD manufacturers, such as Toshiba, to increase the capacity of their spinning platter drives beyond that of existing approaches. SMR technology is recognized as having an impact on write-speeds in drives where this technology is used, especially in the case of continuous random writing. For this reason, Toshiba products are carefully tailored to specific workloads and use cases.

For example, in use cases such as network-attached storage (NAS), where continuous random writing regularly occurs, Toshiba’s current product line for consumers features the N300, which does not use SMR.

The following drives do use SMR technology:

The P300 Desktop PC Hard Drive range of products, which is the product line for client drive application, such as all-in-one PCs and desktop PCs.

In the current range, the following drives do use SMR technology:

  • P300 6TB – HDWD260UZSVA (Bulk)
  • P300 4TB – HDWD240UZSVA (Bulk)

The L200 Laptop PC Hard Drive range of products, which is the product line for client drive application, such as notebook PC, game consoles, and external enclosures, etc.

The following drives also use SMR technology:

  • L200 2TB – HDWL120UZSVA (Bulk), HDWL120EZSTA (Retail), HDWL120XZSTA (Retail)
  • L200 1TB – HDWL110UZSVA (Bulk), HDWL110EZSTA (Retail), HDWL110XZSTA (Retail)

Toshiba announces new 16TB Enterprise Capacity Hard Disk Drives – MG08 Series

Industry’s largest capacity 16TB hard disk drives deliver new level of storage density and improved power efficiency.

Düsseldorf, Germany – 08. January 2019 – Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH announces Enterprise Capacity Hard Disk Drives – MG08 Series, the industry’s largest capacity 16TB[1] [2] Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) HDD. With 33% more capacity than today’s widely adopted 12TB drives, and 14% more capacity than prior 14TB models, MG08 16TB drives are compatible with the widest range of applications and operating systems, and adapted to mixed random and sequential read and write workloads in both cloud and traditional datacenter environments.

The MG08 Series is Toshiba’s second-generation helium-sealed HDD family, and eighth-generation Enterprise Capacity HDD family. “Toshiba has delivered its industry-leading 16TB capacity and improved power efficiency by utilizing the 9-disk helium design, introduced last year in 14TB models, and its own advanced precision laser welding process to ensure the helium remains sealed inside the drive case,” comments Larry Martinez-Palomo, General Manager, HDD Business Unit, Toshiba Electronics Europe.

The MG08 features 7,200rpm performance, a 550TB per year workload rating[3], a 2.5 million-hour MTTF[4], a 512Mib cache buffer[5], and a choice of SATA and SAS interfaces—all in an industry-standard, 3.5-inch[6] form factor.

The MG08 Series further illustrates Toshiba’s commitment to advancing HDD design to meet the evolving needs for storage devices suited for use in cloud-scale servers and storage infrastructure. As data growth continues at an explosive pace, the industry-leading 16TB CMR capacity will help cloud-scale service providers and storage solutions designers to achieve higher storage densities for cloud, hybrid-cloud and on-premises rack-scale storage. Larry Martinez-Palomo from Toshiba Electronics Europe adds: “With its improved power efficiency and 16TB capacity, the MG08 Series will help lower the TCO of storage infrastructure designed for applications such as data-protection, big data aggregation, content serving and digital archiving.”

Shipments of samples of 16TB MG08 Series drives to customers will begin sequentially in Q1.

[2] Definition of capacity: Toshiba defines a megabyte (MB) as 1,000,000 bytes, a gigabyte (GB) as 1,000,000,000 bytes and a terabyte (TB) as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1GB = 230 = 1,073,741,824 bytes and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity (including examples of various media files) will vary based on file size, formatting, settings, software and operating system, such as Microsoft Operating System and/or pre-installed software applications, or media content. Actual formatted capacity may vary.

[3] Workload is a measure of the data throughput in a year, and it is defined as the amount of data written, read or verified by commands from the host system.

[4] MTTF (Mean Time to Failure) is not a guarantee or estimate of product life; it is a statistical value related to mean failure rates for a large number of products which may not accurately reflect actual operation. Actual operating life of the product may be different from the MTTF.

[5] A mebibyte (MiB) means 220, or 1,048,576 bytes.

[6] “3.5-inch” means the form factor of HDDs. It does not indicate a drive’s physical size.

Toshiba adds new 12TB and 14TB helium-sealed models to both the N300 NAS and X300 Performance Hard Drive product line

The new 14TB models deliver up to 40% more capacity and lower power demands over current 10TB models.

Düsseldorf, Germany – 6 December 2018 – Today Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH (TEE) is adding 12TB and 14TB models to both its N300 NAS Hard Drive and X300 Performance Hard Drive series.

The new 12TB and 14TB models use a helium-sealed design, enabling the 3.5-inch mechanical design to deliver increased storage density with a lower hard drive operating power profile. Toshiba laser welding technology and hard drive case design keeps the helium securely sealed inside the drive enclosure.

Additionally, the new 12TB and 14TB models operate at 7,200rpm and come with an ultra-high 256MB data buffer. The N300 NAS and X300 models use Toshiba’s advanced Stable Platter Technology to minimize vibrations by stabilizing the motor shaft at both ends for improved tracking accuracy and maximum performance during read and write operations.

The N300 NAS models include rotational vibration (RV) sensors and deliver sustained data transfer speeds up to 260MB/s for 14TB or up to 253MB/s for 12TB. With support for up to 8[2] HDD multi-RAID systems, the new N300 models are highly scalable to the users’ NAS configurations as their data storage needs evolve large amounts of data need to be efficiently stored and accessed daily.

It is the use of advanced technologies that deliver exceptional reliability and power efficiency, along with the increasing performance and storage capacity of these drives that will continue to keep Toshiba in the position of innovator within the storage space,” said Larry Martinez-Palomo, General Manager, HDD Business Unit, TEE.

The N300 NAS Hard Drive series is designed for use in high-performance personal, home office and small business network attached storage applications such as for scalable RAID systems. It is optimized for the performance, reliability and endurance requirements of 24/7 operation high-capacity storage and comes with a 3-year guarantee.
