Toshiba Defines Nearline HDD Technology Roadmap to Meet Ever-Increasing Global Data Demands

Unique high-density technologies will provide foundation for continued progression

Düsseldorf, Germany, 08th March 2022 – Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH (TEE)  announced that Toshiba Electronic Devices and Storage Corporation has set out its product development strategy in relation to Nearline Hard Disk Drives (HDDs). This will see the company make further engineering innovations in order to deliver a significant increase in the storage capacities that can be supported.

The upcoming generations of Toshiba Nearline HDDs are expected to have reached 35TB before the end of FY2024 and gone beyond 40TB by 2026. These objectives will be achieved via the addition of further stacking layers (with devices featuring a total of 11 layers), combined with the use of Toshiba game-changing proprietary recording technologies. By unlocking the full potential of Flux-Controlled Microwave-Assisted Magnetic Recording (FC-MAMR) and Microwave Assisted Switching Microwave-Assisted Magnetic Recording (MAS-MAMR), it will be possible to dramatically boost recording densities, but still assure elevated signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) figures and ongoing operational reliability. The result is that Toshiba has substantial scope to keep on ramping up capacity levels in the longer term, while also reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO) involved.

“The world that we now live in is fuelled by data, with it being the basis of nearly every day-to-day activity we do. This has major implications for the storage sector, as unprecedented quantities of data are now being generated and much of this needs to be placed on the cloud,” states Larry Martinez-Palomo, General Manager of the Storage Products Division at Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH. “Through close consultation with the leading cloud service operators, we have gained valuable insight into what their future data storage requirements will be. By implementing our advanced high-density FC-MAMR and MAS-MAMR devices, they can be confident of having the data storage capabilities necessary, alongside strong read/write performance parameters and prolonged working lifespan.”

Toshiba pushes N300 and X300 Hard Drive storage capacity to 18TB

Third generation 9-disk Helium-sealed design, along with unique FC-MAMR technology, enables compelling combination of elevated storage density and improved power efficiency

Düsseldorf, Germany, 16 September 2021 – Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH has added new 18TB models to its N300 NAS Hard Drive and X300 Performance Hard Drive portfolios. Both new drives incorporate the company’s game-changing Flux Control – Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (FC-MAMR) technology, which was announced earlier this year.

With FC-MAMR a “Spin Torque Oscillator” (STO) is used to better control and effectively focus the magnetic flux generated in the hard disk drives (HDDs) write head. The focused flux allows more accurate writing operation leading to a smaller magnetic area per bit and higher data densities compared to the previous generation of CMR HDDs.

Use of FC-MAMR has led to the drive density being raised by an extra 12.5% – thereby adding 2TB[1] per disk to the capacity of Toshiba’s previous 16TB models[1].

The new N300 and X300 drives come in an industry-standard 3.5-inch[2] format enclosure, but utilise a proprietary 9-disk Helium-sealed design. Toshiba Group’s advanced laser welding techniques keep the Helium securely sealed inside.

The N300 Series is highly optimised for home office and small business network-attached storage (NAS) and private cloud storage applications, with up to 8 drive bays being accommodated[3]. These drives deliver 7200rpm performance and have integrated RV sensors to compensate for the effects of rotational vibrations. Designed for reliable 24/7 operation and offering a meantime to failure rate (MTTF) of 1.2 million hours, they attain a workload[4] rating of up to 180TB/year.

Intended for PC and high-end desktop workstations, gaming consoles and home media equipment, the X300 Series drives also deliver 7200rpm performance. Their drive stabilisation mechanisms result in improved operational reliability, plus Toshiba Group’s cache technology optimises cache allocation during read/write so as to provide high-level performance in real time.

N300 Series drives all come with a 3-year limited warranty, while the X300 Series drives have a 2-year limited warranty. The new 18TB N300 and X300 models are expected to be available in Q4 2021.

Notes:

[1] Definition of capacity: Toshiba defines a megabyte (MB) as 1 000 000 bytes, a gigabyte (GB) as 1 000 000 000 bytes and a terabyte (TB) as 1 000 000 000 000 bytes. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of two for the definition of 1GB = 230 = 1 073 741 824 bytes and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity (including examples of various media files) will vary based on file size, formatting, settings, software and operating system, such as Microsoft Operating System and/or pre-installed software applications, or media content. Actual formatted capacity may vary.

[2] “3.5-inch” means the form factor of Hard Drives. They do not indicate drive’s physical size.

[3] As for “Drive Bays Supported”, please contact your solutions provider because the compatibility with the host device will vary based on the RAID system.

[4] Workload is a measure of the data written, read or verified by commands from the host system over a calendar year.

Toshiba expands its Surveillance Hard Disk Drive series

The S300 and S300 Pro series are optimized for demanding surveillance applications.

Düsseldorf, Germany, 27 August 2020 – Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbHannounces the expansion of the Toshiba S300 Surveillance Hard Disk Drive series. This includes a new S300 series using shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology for small and medium-sized businesses and the renaming of the conventional magnetic recording (CMR) technology surveillance drives to the S300 Pro series for professional and public sector use.

Targeting the demands of small-to-medium-scale video surveillance systems, the new S300 series hard drives, available in 2TB[1] and 4TB, are optimized for use in cost-constrained applications while meeting the requirements of surveillance systems with up to 32 high-definition camera streams[2]. The S300 series with 5400 rotations per minute (rpm) and a buffer size of 128MB[1] meets various requirements for HD video surveillance including technology for set-top boxes, digital video recorders (DVR), and network video recorder (NVR).

The new low capacity S300 series is based on SMR technology that uses overlapped tracks for higher data density, leaving just the required magnetic surface needed for correct reading. This contrasts with CMR where each track is separated by a small distance. As a result, SMR allows higher capacities for the same magnetic area as a CMR drive to help improve total cost of ownership (TCO). The implementation of an appropriate cache-architecture compensates the potential disadvantages of random re-writing of overlapped tracks making the S300 series suitable for small-to-medium-scale surveillance applications.

For large-scale surveillance systems that require up to 64 high-definition camera streams, video analytics, face-tracking and editing functions, Toshiba offers the S300 Pro series with CMR technology. With high capacities of up to 10TB and a buffer size up to 256MB, they are suitable for surveillance digital video recorders (SDVR), surveillance network video recorders (SNVR), and hybrid SDVR.

“Considering the continuous growth in surveillance systems worldwide, Toshiba’s refreshed S300 series and S300 Pro hard drives offer a tailor-made surveillance storage solution. Targeting the latest requirements in the surveillance storage market, they provide stable 24/7 operation and are optimized to the needs of leading surveillance DVRs and NVRs using eight drive bays or more. Toshiba helps surveillance system integrators, system installation providers, and end users to record and store their video and audio streams with confidence,” noted Lorenzo Martinez-Palomo, General Manager, Storage Products Business Marketing, Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH.

The Toshiba S300 Pro series and the new S300 4TB model are available now, while the S300 2TB is expected to be available later this year. For more information on the products, capacities, and their availability, please visit: https://www.toshiba-storage.com/products/s300/

Use of Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology in Toshiba Consumer Hard Drives.

The introduction of Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology has enabled HDD manufacturers, such as Toshiba, to increase the capacity of their spinning platter drives beyond that of existing approaches. SMR technology is recognized as having an impact on write-speeds in drives where this technology is used, especially in the case of continuous random writing. For this reason, Toshiba products are carefully tailored to specific workloads and use cases.

For example, in use cases such as network-attached storage (NAS), where continuous random writing regularly occurs, Toshiba’s current product line for consumers features the N300, which does not use SMR.

The following drives do use SMR technology:

The P300 Desktop PC Hard Drive range of products, which is the product line for client drive application, such as all-in-one PCs and desktop PCs.

In the current range, the following drives do use SMR technology:

  • P300 6TB – HDWD260UZSVA (Bulk)
  • P300 4TB – HDWD240UZSVA (Bulk)

The L200 Laptop PC Hard Drive range of products, which is the product line for client drive application, such as notebook PC, game consoles, and external enclosures, etc.

The following drives also use SMR technology:

  • L200 2TB – HDWL120UZSVA (Bulk), HDWL120EZSTA (Retail), HDWL120XZSTA (Retail)
  • L200 1TB – HDWL110UZSVA (Bulk), HDWL110EZSTA (Retail), HDWL110XZSTA (Retail)

Toshiba works extensively with Notebook and Desktop PC vendors on the selection of the appropriate storage media to help ensure the data integrity, reliability and planned lifetime requirements of the system.
